New mom here

New postby CocoBean86 » Mon Jun 09, 2008 4:19 pm

If you couldnt tell by my subject message, i'm not from around here. :D

My husband and I just moved to here from the United States, both born there and have lived all our lives....so it's quite the adjustment as we know no one here.

DH decided to give a try living here when he was offered a job. We've been in Westcliff on Sea for about 2 months now and I just found this site.

We have a soon to be 6 month old, Caden Joseph who is the light of our lives. Now that he's getting a bit mobile, hes all over the house!

New parents in a new country, quite the experience.

Hope to get to know you all well over the next few months! I hope there is room for an American on the site. :D

Hi! Of course there's room. Where in the US are you from? My husband and I lived in Chicago for two years between November 2005 and 2007. In fact Felix was born out there and has dual citizenship.

How are you finding life over here? What do you miss about being in the US? I miss Mexican food the most! (Oh, and our friends of course).

We're originally from Columbus, Ohio but prior to the big move we had been living in Chicago for two years. So right around the time you were there actually!

Dual citizenship? Thats great. Do you plan on using it a lot?

It's a bit of an adjustment but i'm finding things ok so far. I need to brush up on the slang here though, I walk around not knowing what anyones talking about lol.

We miss our family and friends a lot and some of the stores they don't seem to have over here (at least that I haven't been able to find). We are also missing the Mexican and Cajun food. DH is missing sports like right now baseball and it will only get worse when American football season comes up lol.

Ha, yes we found the same when we went to the US - I remember the first time I went to a supermarket it just all seemed completely wrong! What shops in particular are you looking for? I think shops-wise I most miss Old Navy and Chipotle.

So where in Chicago did you live? We were in Lakeview. We really liked it actually, it was a great area. In fact I thought Chicago was a fantastic city, we just wanted to be back closer to family and friends so we could properly settle down after having Felix. As for his dual nationality, we used it once already when we went to Canada for a couple of days! I can't see him using it much, to be honest but it's still cool to have. I'm sure we'll take him to see where he was born one day so he can use it then. Was Caden born here or there?

Hi! Welcome to the country and to Essex mums! What a massive move for you, your hubby and your son! I'm Lisa, I have a 7 month old son named Ashton.

If your hubby is missing his american sports tell him to subscribe to the NASN channel on TV - they show baseball, basketball, amercan football and ice hockey etc! A little slice of home! My hubby although not american loves basketball and ice hockey.

Hope you are enjoying Essex!

Old Navy in particular. My hubby and I are also currently going through Chipotle withdrawal . Also American Eagle (clothing store), Target (similar to Walmart) and Best Buy (electronics store).

Lakeview is a great area! We lived in the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area. I agree, Chicago is a wonderful city. DH wanted to try something new though so here we are. :D

Caden was born in the US but when we start trying for number 2, it looks more then likely the baby will be born here.

Lisa, we will definitely check that channel out. DH would love it.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

I've actually been trying to replicate Chipotle recipes. I'm getting there with the guacamole but can't quite do the salsa, even though I'm sure it should be really simple. :?

How funny that you were in the same area! We may have even bumped into each other. So was Caden born at St. Joseph's? Ooh, speaking of Lincoln Park, there's something else I miss - Cafe Ba-ba-reeba!

Yes that is pretty funny we lived in the same area in Chicago and now here!

Yes he was born at St. Joseph's.

I actually bought a Cooking Set from Ba-ba-reeba's before coming here. I haven't tried to cook up anything yet, i'm afraid i'll ruin it.

Jeanette, we're going to be living here for a few years then deciding if we want it to be a permanent move or move back to the US.
